INSPIRE Scholarship 2020 | Registration Form (Released), Inspire Online Process, Eligibility, Awards, Dates

INSPIRE Scholarship 2019-20 (इनसपिरे स्कालरशिप 2019-20): “Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE)” is an innovative course sponsored and administered by the Department of Science & Technology (DST) DST Inspire scholarship online for the pull of talent to Science. The basic goal of INSPIRE 2020 is to deliver to the youth of the country the activities of creative pursuit of science, pull talent to the art of science at an early age and thus create the required significant human resource pool for sustaining and expanding the Science & Technology system and R & D base.

A prominent feature of the program is that it does not consider in conducting competitive exams to identify talent at any level. It concludes in and relies on the ability of the existing educational edifice to identify the talent.

 The government of India has passed the INSPIRE Scheme in November 2008 at a total expense of about Rs 1979.25 crores in the 11th Plan Period and Honourable Prime Minister originated the program on 13th December 2008. The plan is continuing in the 12th Plan period at a budgetary allocation of Rs. 2200 crores.

INSPIRE has three components

Scheme for Early Attraction of Talent  (SEATS),
Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE) (INSPIRE SHE Scholarship) and
Assured Opportunity for Research Careers (AORC).

INSPIRE Scholarship Eligibility (इंस्पायर स्कॉलरशिप)

To apply for Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE), the candidates must have qualified class 12 and proceeding courses in Natural Sciences at the B.Sc. or Integrated M.Sc. level. Given below is the complete information about the eligibility guidelines of this scholarship.

  • The candidate must be in the age-group of 17-22 years.
  • The applicants must be among the top 1% of the successful learners in terms of overall marks in their 10+2 board exams.
  • The candidate should have registered in courses of Natural and Basic Sciences at the level of BSc, BS, and Integrated MSc/MS, in the same year of qualifying class 12th.
  • The candidates who are amongst the top 10000 rankers in Joint Entrance Examination (JEE)IIT, AIEEE (top 20000 rankers) and passed CBSE-Medical (AIPTM) and chosen to study Natural/Basic Sciences are eligible.
  • The applicants who got admission in Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER), National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Department of Atomic Energy Centre for Basic Sciences (DAE-CBS) at the Mumbai University for pursuing programs in Natural/Basic Sciences commencing to B.Sc. and M.Sc. degree are also eligible.
  • The candidates who are KVPY (Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojna), National Talent Search Examination (NTSE), Olympiad Medallists and Jagadish Bose National Science Talent Search (JBNSTS) student and are seeking courses in Natural/Basic Sciences commencing to B.Sc. and M.Sc. degree are eligible.

INSPIRE Scholarship Application Procedure

The applications for INSPIRE Scholarship 2020 Application Form for Higher Education (inspire she scholarship) are received through online mode from the Inspire Portal. Given below is the entire guideline on how to apply for the scholarship.

  • The applicant has to register as a new user on the INSPIRE scholarship portal www.inspire.com scholarship 2020. (http://www.online-inspire.gov.in/)
  • The applicants must enter their name, gender, date of birth, email, password, eligibility criteria and verification code for successful registration.
  • The candidates will receive user ID and password on their registered email ID where they need to click on the activation link to begin his/her account.
  • The candidate should keep the scanned copies of all the demanded documents ready before filling the application form.
  • The candidate must log in to the INSPIRE scholarship Login portal using their credentials.
  • Now, the applicant must fill in all the necessary details like personal details, enrollment information at B.Sc. and Integrated M.Sc. level, senior secondary aggregates, competitive exam details, contact details and other mandatory details in the scholarship application form.
  • Also, the candidate has to upload all the needed documents the online inspire scholarship 2020 application form.

Indira Gandhi Single Girl Child Scholarship for PG

Indira Gandhi Scholarship: Indira Gandhi Single Girl Child Scholarship is a UGC system launched with the goal of empowering our country’s women through educational methods. Going forward with this goal, the govt implemented Indira Gandhi Single Girl Child Scholarship to offset the direct cost of higher education women, particularly teenagers who occur to be their father’s only kid. Under this single girl kid scholarship, economic support of Rs. 36,200 per year is provided to the chosen applicants.

Indira Gandhi Scholarship – Eligibility Criteria

To be qualified for this UGC grant, candidates must be women enrolled in universities /colleges/institutions recognized by UGC, State/Central Government or nationally important universities. The descriptions of the qualifying requirements for the Indira Gandhi Single Girl Child Scholarship are provided below.

  1. In any specified university or postgraduate college, applicants must be accepted to the periodic full-time 1st year Master’s degree school.
  2. The girl’s applicants must be her fathers’ only kid.
  3. The applicants must have no sibling, although the learners of the girls who are paired daughters / fraternal sisters may qualify for this UGC scholarship.
  4. At the moment of entry to the PG program, applicants must not be over 30 years of era.
  5. This scholarship is not available for the applicants accepted to the PG class through the distance education method.
  6. There are also no revenue requirements to qualify for this scholarship for learners.
How to Apply for Indira Gandhi Scholarship?

The method of applying for a scholarship is simple and easy for candidates as the entire method has been done internet. Through the formal gateway of the National Scholarship Portal, candidates can qualify for this UGC scholarship. Follow the measures below to complete the Indira Gandhi Single Girl Child Scholarship request type.

  1. For the first time, candidates applying for NSP must register as a new user with NSP.
  2. Complete all the data you need and press’ Register’ to register. The registered mobile number generates a student application ID and password.
  3. The girl candidates must use the newly generated ID and code to sign in to NSP.
  4. An OTP is sent to the licensed mobile number that requires applicants to modify their password, which is a compulsory move.
  5. Once the password has been altered, applicants are guided to the Applicant’s Dashboard Page, where applicants need to tap on the’ Application Form’ to begin the method.
  6. All required information such as enrollment information, educational information, fundamental information, communication information and information of the system must be provided by the candidates.
  7. The candidates must upload all the records needed to promote identification and educational status.

Indira Gandhi Scholarship – Terms and Conditions

A few terms and conditions need to be considered by the applicants if they want to take advantage of this UGC scholarship. Some guidelines and laws connected to this girl’s scholarship are highlighted below.

  1. This UGC scholarship is only available for those applicants who are in the 1st year of a PG class.
  2. Applicants are not responsible to obtain any extra subsidy instead of hostel fees, medical fees, etc.
  3. Under this single girl baby scholarship, no tuition fee is charged from the award winners by the recipient institutions.
  4. After one year of the grant of the scholarship, the quantity has been completed, the applicants must send their progress report to the specified company (Canara Bank) in the recommended format, depending on which grant is distributed to the beneficiaries for the next study. This document must be duly ratified by the University’s Head of Department and Registrar, or the institution’s head or college’s principal.
  5. Candidates must bear in mind that if they stop their research without notification to UGC, they must reimburse the entire sum straight to the UGC fund via e-mode (RTGS / NEFT).
  6. This scholarship’s award winners are not debarred from receiving other scholarships.
  7. The grant may be terminated if applicants are engaged in any type of abuse, provide inaccurate data at any point of the request, or achieve less than 55% in the first year (50% for Physically Challenged awards).

Self Study ? - What did the HRD Minister say...




At this time, when everyone is suggested to maintain social distancing, students of class 10 should start self-study at their homes. They should understand the value of this time as they have entered an important phase of their academic life. They will appear for their first ever CBSE Board Exams next year, in 2021

In view of the current circumstances and after receiving a lot of requests from parents and teachers, we are contemplating the option of reduction in the syllabus and instructional hours for the coming academic year. This is what HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal said.

The NCERT, in a meeting held on June 4, was asked by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to “analyse the Class X and XII syllabus and textbooks for the purpose of rationalisation of the curriculum this year”. The CBSE prescribes only NCERT textbooks to its affiliated schools.

The document says that while the topics taught by the teacher may be assessed in the Board examination, the self-study concepts can be covered in the school’s internal assessment. The CBSE sets aside 20 marks in each subject for internal assessment of the student. This, if accepted by CBSE, would mean that the Board examination next year will not assess students on topics and concepts that they have covered through self-study, assignments and projects.

In Political Science, Bolivia’s water war and the movement for democracy in Nepal are among topics that may not figure in the Board exam. In History, chapters ‘The Age of Industrialization’ and ‘Print Culture and the Modern World’ have been suggested for “project work and innovative activities”. The latter looks at the development of print (books, journals, newspapers, prints of famous paintings etc), from its beginnings in East Asia to its expansion in Europe and India.

According to sources in the NCERT, the draft document is still under discussion and could undergo further changes.

Are We Really All Connected by Just Six Degrees of Separation?


Most of us are familiar with the concept of six degrees of separation - the idea is that anyone in the planet can be connected to anyone else in just six steps. So through just five other people, you're effectively connected to Narendra Modi, Donald Trumph, the last man of Mahana, the Queen of England, Tom Cruise, or even a Mongolian sheep herder. But is there actually any science to back up this commonly cited theory?

If you just take a look at the numbers, the six degrees of separation idea seems pretty plausible. Assuming everyone knows at least 44 people, and that each of those people knows an entirely new 44 people, and so on, the maths shows that in just six steps everyone could be connected to 44^6, or 7.26 billion people - more than are alive on Earth today.

the whole basis of the theory came from a 1929 short story called Chains, in which one of the characters challenges the others to find another person on Earth that he can not connect himself to through fewer than five intermediaries.

This idea wasn't scientifically tested until the 1960s, when a psychologist sent 300 packages out to people in Nebraska and Boston, and asked them to use their networks to get them back to one specific target - a stockbroker living in Boston. They weren't asked to forward it to him directly, but to send it to someone they knew on a first name basis, with instructions for that person to forward it on to someone in their network that they thought might know the stockbroker.

Only 64 of those packages actually reached the target, with an average path length of just 5.2 intermediary connections, and this experiment was used as evidence for six degrees of separation, or the 'small world phenomenon', as the researcher called it.

But Derek dug a little deeper and found that, of the original 300 packages, 100 were sent to people already living in Boston (where the target also lives) and 100 were sent to stockbrokers who shared a profession with the target, so there were really only 100 purely random packages sent out. And of those 100, only 18 made it back to the target. "So we're talking about a sample size of 18 is all the evidence there was for six degrees of separation". But that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. The real breakthrough came a few decades later thanks to a college game called 'Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon', where students had to try and link any role model to Kevin Bacon via their co-stars in six steps or less.

Analyze and Fix the roots of the Problem...


Listen to a story, “You and a friend are having a picnic on the bank of a river. And you've just laid down your picnic blankets, you're about to have your meal when you hear a shout from the direction of the river. You look back and there's a child thrashing around in the water, apparently drowning. So you both dive in, you fish the child out, you bring them to shore. Just as you're starting to calm down you hear another shout. You look back, there's a second child splashing around again, apparently drowning and so back in you go. You fish them out, then there are two more children who come along right behind and so begins this kind of revolving door of rescue, where you're in and out, and fishing kids out and it's exhausting work. And right about that time, you notice your friend is swimming to the shore, steps out, starts to walk away as though to leave you alone, and you cry out, "Hey, where are you going? I need your help. All these kids are drowning" and your friend says, "I'm going upstream to figure out who's throwing all these kids in the river."

And that is the problem with most organizations. We are too focused on our own work and trying to quickly solve any issues that come up in order to just keep moving forward - we reward busy work. The result is an endless cycle of putting out fires as they come, when instead we should be able to recognize recurrent problems so we can get to the root cause. If we can find out how to fix the systems that cause the problems in the first place, we would save so much time and energy.

Strategies to promote empathy in children.. The third one may be difficult


We do know that when children learn to be empathic early in their development, it can lead to much stronger empathy skills later in life as they become adults who treat others with kindness, respect and understanding. Empathic children can become empathic parents, spouses, co-workers and friends.

Empathy is not a fixed trait; it can be fostered. It can be encouraged and cultivated by empathic siblings, as well as adult caregivers. But empathy does take time to develop.

1. Model how to value feelings

First, whenever possible, show warmth and empathy towards children.

Children are watching others to learn appropriate ways of behaving and interacting, and are known to be influenced by the behaviours they see around them. You can be a good role model by acknowledging and valuing others’ feelings, and showing understanding and sympathy when someone is sad, upset, distressed, frustrated or in need of help.

When children show negative emotions, acknowledge how they feel. Provide nurturing until they signal they are OK to move onto something else.

Young children sometimes need help understanding what they are feeling, so label the emotion for them. For example, if they are crying, say: “You seem upset. How can I help?”

2. Connect feelings, thoughts and behaviors

Second, when talking about feelings, connect behaviors with the feelings for children so that they understand cause and effect.

For example: “Max is feeling sad because Oliver took his toy. What might help Max feel better?”

Teaching kids about cause and effect can also be done through stories, play-acting or reading books. Talk to children about the thoughts, feelings and behaviors of the characters. What might the characters do next?

Connect these scenarios with the child’s own experiences. For example, if the character is sad because she misses her parents, connect that feeling to a time the child also expressed sadness for something similar. This helps the child more clearly understand the connection between feelings, thoughts and behaviors.

For older children (aged five and up), ask them to step into the mind, or take the perspective, of another child or adult: “How do you think they are feeling? Why might they be upset? What could we do to help?”

3. Build a ‘climate’ of empathy

Third, as a family, or as a classroom, put a focus on working together to build a “climate” that encourages children to be empathic and understanding with their family and friends.

If your child, or a child in your classroom, is struggling with empathy, try to set them up for success by creating opportunities to be empathic and highlight for them how being kind can benefit everyone involved:

“That was very kind of you to help your sister when she lost her favourite toy. I bet she’ll remember that and want to help you when you need it!”

This will foster more of the same types of behaviour in the future.

Strong empathy skills can set children up for success in life. Parents, teachers, caregivers and even siblings can play a powerful role in helping one another achieve this success.

THE HIDDEN CURRICULUM & CLAREFY MODEL

Parents often think and make their children focus on academics alone. And because the values and lessons reinforced by the hidden curriculum are often the accepted status quo, it may be assumed that these “hidden” practices and messages don’t need to change—even if they are contributing to undesirable behaviors and results, whether it’s bullying, conflicts, or low graduation and college-enrollment rates.

9 Tips to cope with your children during quarantine period. The 9th Tip may be difficult for you


1. Keep Calm and Carry on:

Keeping calm requires us to be aware of our own anxieties, restrictive beliefs and habitual behaviors that act as personal barriers to a sense of inner peace. Self-inquiry and reflection helps you to establish what these ideas and actions are.

2. Create a timetable:

Structure a week for your child that replicates a school week. Set them a timetable with start and end time, with breaks in between. Map out the learning they will be doing. Factor in movement breaks. If you’re not confident or have time constraints to do this effectively, outsource this service.

3.Make it work for you!

Depending on the age of your children, they will need your attention throughout the day. If this is the case, and your work allows you to, you could divide your working hours throughout the day. Perhaps work a few hours in the morning, some in the afternoon and then in the evening.

4. Create Bonding Exercises

This is a great time for bonding self care and doing fun stuff that everyone can enjoy.

1) Make shampooing and conditioning time fun and educational.

Try and get children involved with your daily activities. If you usually do a morning work out; let them do it with you. You could also try finding new methods of relaxation such as deep breathing, mindfulness or meditation. As well as being great ways of calming the mind and relieving stress, they are all activities children can get involved in too.

7. Be Intentional

Be intentional about spending quality time and eat together
Bake together with the children, let the children choose recipes and get them involved in the whole process and measurements can help children learn about maths and measures. Cuddle together and watch their favorite movies.

8. Have a Learning Mindset

Set the mindset for learning. Every morning set daily targets and have motivational quotes to enthuse your child. Where possible display these on the wall, to create a positive environment for learning.
Allow your child to be creative, explore and ask questions. You don't have to know all of the answers but it promotes the critical thinking

9. Listen!

We all know that children ask a lot of questions and as parents we can easily zone out ignoring the constant nagging sounds of “Mummy, mummy, muuummmmy!…look what I can…” (Daddies get it too), However, its always important, but more so now during these time of uncertainty that our children feel heard, so practice those active listening skills.

Latest CBSE decisions amid Covid-19: Direct promotions to selective board exams




The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) took the step of postponing all examinations from classes 1 to 8 as soon as the virus reached the country. In mid-March, the Board took the decision of postponing all the papers that were left in the Board Exam until further notice.
Below mentioned are some of the potential decisions taken by CBSE regarding the academic developments of school students amid the coronavirus outbreak:

One-time measures proposed by CBSE:
  • ·        Students of classes 1 to 8 may be promoted to the higher grade without conducting exams. This decision will be taken after adequate consultation with NCERT.
  • ·        Many schools have not yet conducted the annual examination for classes 9 and 11. These schools include all the Kendriya Vidyalayas, Naodaya Vidyalayas and some other government and provate schools. These schools are advised to promote the students of class 9 and 11 to the higher grade based on their performance in project work, periodic tests, term exams, etc. conducted so far.
  • ·        When it comes to rescheduling the board examinations for classes 10 and 12, CBSE has not yet made the final decision of if and when the examinations will be conducted. The Board will be giving a minimum 10 day notice to all stakeholders before scheduling the examinations again.
  • ·        As the Board was not able to conduct several board examinations for classes 10 and 12, they have decided to only conduct board examinations for main subjects that are required for promotion and admission into higher educational institutes.
  • ·        For CBSE schools located outside India, it will be difficult to bring the answer booklets for class 10 and 12 students back to India for checking due to the current situation. So, the Board has decided not to hold any examinations for class 10 and 12 students studying in CBSE schools outside India.
  • ·        Due to the coronavirus outbreak, the board has not been able to continue with the evaluation process of answer sheets as per schedule. Though the board has not reached a decision yet regarding the issue, they will notify all concerned parties 3 to 4 days before the evaluation process will be set to commence again.
  • ·        To avoid being misled by rumours, all stakeholders are hereby informed to only trust the official announcements by the Board that are made on the Board’s website.
  • ·        All schools are requested to ensure that this information is disseminated to all concerned students by their respective schools.

Amid the covid-19 pandemic, the Board has also requested all their stakeholders and concerned parties to be patient for further instructions. Though the situation might not seem in the favour of students currently studying in CBSE schools, the Board is trying to ensure that their academic future is secure.

Odisha Govt Initiates Online Competition For Children Amid Lockdown - Mo Pratibha

UNICEF, Odisha government launch online competition to keep home-confined students busy.


In a novel initiative to keep young minds fresh and engage kids staying at home during the 21-day lockdown, the State government in collaboration with UNICEF has come up with an online competition.
Titled ‘Mo Pratibha’ or My Talent, children from ages 5 till 18 can take part in this competition in categories of painting, drawing, poster, slogan, short story and poetry. The entries should be on following two themes-
  • Being at home during the lockdown
  • My responsibility as a young citizen during COVID-19
The original entries will be judged accordingly in three age groups of (5-10, 11-15 and 16-18). The winners will be announced every Thursday and will get a certificate from Government of Odisha-UNICEF.

Stuttering Problem and Emotional Intelligence



The ancient split between emotion and intelligence is over. "They are together again, this time under the rubric of emotional intelligence (EI)". The work of many outstanding neural scientists has shown that the mind consists of both thoughts and emotions. Both work together in concert, influencing reasoning and decision making. In order to succeed in stuttering intervention, an understanding of the critical link between thinking and feeling is necessary. Self-defeating and self-handicapping thoughts, abnormal physiological reactions, fear and anxiety, and low self-esteem may often negatively affect decision making and life choices in people who stutter (PWS). Therefore, it is only through addressing the power of the mind and feelings that lasting change in general well-being, including successful communication, can be achieved.

Although many leading authorities in the field of stuttering intervention have long presented their philosophy on psychotherapy and counseling approaches with clients who stutter, and have proposed desirable attributes for speech-language pathologists (SLPs) working with PWS, many clinicians do not address the emotional aspects of stuttering, and lack the emotional competencies necessary to effectively treat PWS.

Overcoming Fear and Tension in Stuttering - For School Children


Most children talk without much difficulty most of the time. It’s true that children hesitate and stumble over words at times, especially when under stress or fatigue, but they show little concern over such mistakes. What, then, makes your speech different and what can you do to help yourself? Invariably, the child who stutters overreacts to his mistakes. He fears they will occur, becomes tense and feels helpless. During the time that tension is so high, the flow of speech stops or will not start. As you continue to have these tense moments that become different from what normal speakers experience, fear increases to higher and higher levels. You come to dread and perhaps avoid speaking. Many stutterers learn that their greatest enemies are fear and tension. If the battle with stuttering is to be won, fear and tension must be gradually eliminated. Let’s look at some battle plans that have helped quite a few stutterers conquer the majority of their fears, eliminate excessive tensions, and find that speech in most situations can once again come easily.

Conquering Tension. You must learn to substitute easy, slower, more relaxed movements for rushed, tight, forced movements. Typical tension sites are your chest and breath, your throat and vocal cords, jaw, lips and tongue. The practice suggested here can make for success in reducing the fear that follows from blocked movements, so think of these as stages of therapy that you can “put together” for greater effect.

Choose some words that begin with sounds that you think of as being hard—those on which you often stutter. Speech normally begins with a relaxed, unconscious flow of breath. Practice sighing and letting voice come easily. You don’t make voice, it just happens if you will let it. The same is true of sounds you make with tongue and lips. Feel yourself gently close the lips for the “P” or move the tongue to form such sounds as “T” and “K,” then go ahead and say the rest of the word. Notice how little effort speaking takes. Fear has resulted in too much forcing to get words out. You must learn what ‘not forcing’ is, and practice until easy movements become habitual. First, practice at a very soft, almost silent level, then gradually at a normal voice level. Practice the movement gently to make the difficult word begin easier, then work on other words that begin with that same movement.

Assuming that you engage faithfully in daily practice, try a different sound each week. Fear of words lessens as you repeatedly prove to yourself you have a new, easy way of producing them that is becoming automatic. As you practice, be sure not to let the tongue, lips, vocal cords, or breath become tight or touch too hard. No word or speech movement requires conscious effort. Feel the relaxed easy movements into and out of words. Stop and begin the easy movements again for the next word series. Now, you are talking in phrases that are short and that you have confidence you can initiate, if you remember to use the easy beginning you have practiced. Remember, speech sounds better in short phrases with frequent pauses.

By conquering fear-arousal through learning to plan your approach, and then using the easy movements which keep tension from making you feel helpless, you are beginning to control stuttering rather than letting it rule you. Certain speaking situations become easier. At this point you must begin to integrate your success. That is, you are not just having good and bad days, you are creating some successes out of potential failure. That’s what building confidence is all about—and stutterers say time after time, “I talk better when I’m more confident.” When you have created a better performance, you can realistically feel more confidence. The model is then begun for turning ‘bad cycles’ into good ones. You are then able to turn your attention to fluency rather than frequent expectation of stuttering. One of our adult stutterers who successfully went through the above said, “Now I think more about my fluent successes, and does that ever help!”

You appreciate most in life those things you do for yourself. Getting over stuttering takes tremendous self-discipline and desire. We have found that just practicing easy movements without trying to reduce fear is not too successful, since high fear keeps you from remembering the new easier speech movements at the time when you most need to use them. Also, just trying to reduce fear without giving you something to do that is new — and that works — may simply allow fear to creep back into the situation very quickly. 

School Children who stutter should be encouraged to lead positive lives without fear and anxiety. They need psychological care and moral support.

Children and coronavirus: what we know and don't know


As the number of Covid-19 cases rises worldwide, parents trying to protect their children from the disease can take solace in one thing: the disease has generally been milder in children.

“Its pretty clear from all of the data who is ending up in hospital and who is dying. Severe disease is very rare in children, Its not yet completely clear whether this is because children are not being infected as regularly or do they just not get sick. Some of these children have a large amount of virus but they weren’t very sick,” said Williams.

Last week, there was a paper released from the Chinese Centers of Disease Control looking at people getting sick and who they had come into contact with, which suggested the rates of infection in children are just as common as in adults. The new research also suggested that perhaps the virus could be shed in fecal matter from children.

“People have looked at this a lot for SARS-CoV2 in adults and children and have found viral RNA in the stool, its not currently clear what this means – the secretions from our nose, respiratory viruses go into our esophagus to be swallowed, happens constantly with respiratory viruses,” said Williams, noting that there is evidence of other respiratory viruses in the stools of infected individuals.

“The question is, can it be transmitted to others via fecal material? This is likely most relevant with kids with diapers. All of us can have low level experience exposure of fecal material by poor hand washing but the only time you’re really exposed to a lot of fecal material is when we are changing kids diapers,” said Williams

However just because genetic traces from viruses are found in fecal matter does not mean that contact with fecal matter can make people sick. The viruses could be dead meaning that they can no longer infect people, but can still be picked up.

“This is really in contrast to a virus like norovirus (cruise ship virus) where people shed billions of virus particles in their fecal material and its easily transmitted person to person,” said Williams.

To prove that virus from fecal material could actually infect others, scientists would need to culture it from fecal samples in a special biosafety containment area, but these experiments have not yet been done. So overall, should parents be reassured by this study?

“Yes, I think so. It’s a small study, but every large or small piece of data we are getting suggests kids don’t get severe disease from this virus, although they get infected at similar rates and they might be spreaders of the virus,” said Williams.

However, there are many unknowns about coronavirus, and research is ongoing. Here is what we know now.

Can children catch coronavirus?

Yes. They can be infected with and appear to be able to transmit coronavirus, even if they do not have symptoms. That is why it is important for children to practice social distancing and hand-washing, even if they do not appear ill.

How does coronavirus affect children?

It is generally believed to cause milder symptoms in children, but the specific impacts by age are becoming clearer as the outbreak goes on.

Much of what we know today is based on reports out of China, where the outbreak began. There 2.4% of all identified cases were in children under 19 years old. An even smaller number within this group of children had severe symptoms, 2.5%, or what the World Health Organization (WHO) described as “a very small proportion”. But more research is being done and a clearer picture is still emerging.

Why does coronavirus affect children differently?

That remains unknown. Dr Jay C Butler, deputy director of infectious disease at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said, “The phenomenon is very significant,” on a live-streamed show hosted by the Journal of the American Medical Association, but that the mechanisms are “really unknown”.

People aged 60 and older or with existing health conditions remain the most vulnerable to the coronavirus. That includes people with conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease and chronic respiratory conditions, according to the WHO.
